Tunisia-specific things to know

  • The number of photos depends on the place: four for the Ministry of the Interior inside Tunisia, two for the e-consulate and the consulates in Paris and Canada. Print four copies from one file and every post read is covered.
  • The size is written two ways — 3.5/4.5 cm and 4.5 × 3.5 cm — which is the same 35 × 45 mm photo; the consulates specify colour and, at Paris and Canada, no glasses.
  • No page read gives a rule on headscarves or head coverings. A woman who wears a headscarf should ask her consulate before the shoot; a bare-faced frontal photo with the whole face visible is the baseline.

How passport photos are verified

The Tunisian passport photograph is the same size everywhere — 3.5 × 4.5 cm, written 4.5 × 3.5 cm on some pages — on a white background, but the number of photos and the extra rules depend on where you apply. Inside Tunisia the Ministry of the Interior lists «4 photos with the following characteristics: white background, 3.5/4.5 cm» for a first passport, a renewal and a replacement.

Abroad, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' e-consulate and the consulates ask for two identity photographs in colour on a white background of 4.5 × 3.5 cm; the Paris and Canada consulates add «without glasses». None of the pages read says anything about head coverings or a headscarf, nor how large the face must be in the picture, so for those points the consulate that covers you is the one to ask.

Typical rejection reasons and how to fix them

Typical reasons a photo is rejected under the rules Ministry of the Interior of Tunisia and the Tunisian e-consulate (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) publishes: what is wrong and what to change.

ReasonFix
Size not 3.5 × 4.5 cm (4.5 × 3.5 cm) Print 35 mm wide by 45 mm high.
Background not white Use a plain white background, evenly lit.
Not enough photos (four inside Tunisia, two at consulates) or not the same photo Bring the number your office lists, identical, from one file.
Glasses worn (Paris and Canada), or a black-and-white photo (consulates ask for colour) Take the glasses off and use a colour print.

How to take it

How to take your Tunisia passport photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain white

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 35 × 45 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.

  • Ministry of the Interior (services.interieur.gov.tn), documents for a passport — first issuance, renewal, replacement: a machine-readable passport form, a copy of the national identity card (or a birth extract for minors), «4 photos with the following characteristics: white background, format 3.5/4.5 cm», proof of schooling for pupils and students, a guardian's authorisation for minors, and the stamp duty; the old passport for a renewal.
  • e-Consulat (Tunisians abroad), passport issuance and renewal — adult, student, child: «Two identity photographs (in colour, with white background; dimensions 4.5×3.5 cm)», the form signed in the reserved box, a copy of the identity card, proof of work or schooling, a copy of the valid residence card, and payment of chancery fees; for a renewal the old passport.

  • Both sizes written — 3.5/4.5 cm and 4.5 × 3.5 cm — describe the same print, 35 mm wide by 45 mm high; no page read gives a face height, a head-covering rule or a maximum age for the photo.
