Australia Visa Photo Requirements: JPEG 70 KB–3.5 MB, 1200 x 1600 px, Light Grey or Neutral Background
Home Affairs wants a digital JPEG for each applicant: 70 KB–3.5 MB, preferably 1200 x 1600 px, under 6 months, neutral or light grey background, unedited.

Key points
5 points- A digital photograph for each applicant, children included: JPEG, 70 KB to 3.5 MB, preferred 1200 x 1600 pixels.
- No more than 6 months old; full-face head and shoulders; colour; neutral or light grey background that contrasts with the face.
- Unedited: do not remove the background, moles, wrinkles, scars or red eyes.
- Glasses off unless they cannot be removed for medical reasons; then untinted, no reflection, frames clear of the eyes.
- Upload only the digital copy — a scan of a photo or a photo of a photo is not acceptable.
Most Australian visa applications are made online in ImmiAccount, and the Department of Home Affairs asks for a digital photograph of each applicant, including children. Its help page sets file limits and appearance rules. Here they are.
The file
| Parameter | Home Affairs |
|---|---|
| Format | JPEG |
| File size | Between 70 KB and 3.5 MB |
| Resolution | 1200 x 1600 pixels preferred |
| Age of the photo | No more than 6 months |
Only a digital copy may be uploaded. A scan of a printed photo, or a photograph of a photo, is not acceptable. Home Affairs recommends a professional passport photo provider — such as an Australia Post office, or a similar provider outside Australia — which can email you a digital copy.
What the photo must show
- A full-face view of head and shoulders, in colour, good quality.
- A neutral or light grey background that contrasts with the face.
- Unedited: the background, moles, wrinkles, scars or red eyes must not be removed.
Glasses and head coverings
- Remove glasses, unless they cannot be removed for medical reasons. If worn: untinted lenses, frames not obscuring the eyes, no reflection.
- A religious head covering is allowed if the whole face is visible and the covering is plain material without patterns.
When a paper photo is asked for
For paper evidence Home Affairs describes a “Photograph – Passport”: 45 mm x 35 mm, head and shoulders only, facing the camera, plain background, less than six months old, with the person’s name printed on the back.
Our Australia visa photo tool makes a JPEG inside the 70 KB–3.5 MB range on a light grey background.
