Luxembourg extends temporary protection for Ukrainians until 4 March 2027: how to renew the biometric card

Ukrainians benefiting from temporary protection in Luxembourg may continue to stay in the country: the temporary protection regime has been extended for another year — until 4 March 2027. However, to retain the status, most people need to replace their biometric card on time, as its validity expires on 4 March 2026.

What exactly changed

At EU level, the Member States on 13 June 2025 politically agreed to extend temporary protection for people fleeing the war in Ukraine until 4 March 2027. The decision was formally adopted on 15 July 2025 (Council Implementing Decision (EU) 2025/1460). It applies to all Member States, including Luxembourg.

In practice, for Luxembourg this means the following: biometric cards issued earlier and valid until 4 March 2026 must be replaced with new ones. The new card will be valid from 5 March 2026 to 4 March 2027.

Who this concerns

The changes concern all persons who hold the status of beneficiary of temporary protection in Luxembourg and whose biometric card expires on 4 March 2026. Replacing the card is necessary in order to continue to enjoy the rights associated with temporary protection, namely:

• the right to remain in the territory of Luxembourg;
• the right to work;
• the right to material assistance provided by the state.

If the card is not renewed, these rights will be lost.

How the renewal works

The Directorate General for Immigration sent beneficiaries personal letters with step-by-step instructions on renewing temporary protection and obtaining a new biometric card. The letters were sent out in batches from 28 November 2025 to 6 February 2026, so they may have arrived at different times.

The letter sets out the specific steps that your particular family must take. Carefully follow the instructions in this letter and act in good time, without putting it off until the very deadline of 4 March 2026.

What to do if there is no letter

If your temporary protection expires on 4 March 2026 and you have still not received the letter with instructions, you need to contact the Directorate General for Immigration yourself. The official government communiqué gives the address immigration.desk@mai.etat.lu for this, while the Guichet.lu portal lists immigration.asile@mai.etat.lu and the phone number (+352) 247 84565 (9:00–12:00 and 14:00–16:00) for general enquiries regarding temporary protection. Use any of these contacts — without a valid card, the status and the rights associated with it are not retained.

Alternative: a longer-term residence permit

Beneficiaries of temporary protection who meet certain conditions may apply for a more stable residence permit. For example, a residence permit as an employed worker is available to those who work under an employment contract with a monthly salary at least equal to the minimum social wage for an unskilled worker. This may be appropriate for those who plan to stay in the country for a long time.
