What cropping will not fix
- A wrong background — cropping does not repaint the wall behind you. This document needs: plain white
- A shadow on the face or on the wall. Step 1–2 m away from the wall and shoot facing a window.
- Glare on the lenses. Take the glasses off or turn away from the light source and shoot again.
- A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
- Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 390 × 567 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.

China-specific things to know
- Head height 28-33 mm from chin to crown on the 33 × 48 mm frame (PRC consular print spec; the authority publishes millimetres, not percentages)
- On-site capture at PSB Exit-Entry office is the default; self-supplied photos only accepted overseas via consulate
- Glasses permitted but only clear lenses + thin frames (no anti-reflective coating, no tint)
- Any digital editing is grounds for rejection — China is one of the few authorities with explicit anti-retouching enforcement via automated checks
