Do not confuse it with another India document
India does not use one frame for everything. This page is about passport — 35 × 45 mm. The documents below are cut to a different size, so a file prepared here will not fit them.
What cropping will not fix
- A wrong background — cropping does not repaint the wall behind you. This document needs: white
- A shadow on the face or on the wall. Step 1–2 m away from the wall and shoot facing a window.
- Glare on the lenses. Take the glasses off or turn away from the light source and shoot again.
- A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
- Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 413 × 531 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.
Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one

India-specific things to know
- Indian standard head height is 36-38mm — TIGHTER than ICAO 9303 (32-36mm). Heads look bigger than European/American passports
- Passport Seva Kendras (521 across India) offer on-site retake for ₹150-200 if photo fails
- September 2025 ICAO update: glasses prohibited (was previously thin frames allowed)
- mPassport mobile app accepts the same digital upload — JPEG 630×810 px under 250 KB

Where these numbers come from

- Passport Seva publishes ICAO-compliant photograph guidelines for passport services.
- The official PDF requires a colour photograph with dimensions of 630 × 810 pixels.
- The face must take up 80-85% of the photograph, with the full head visible from top of hair to bottom of chin.
- Passport Seva requires a white background and says photos should be unaltered by computer software.
