What these millimetres work out to
- In a 51 × 51 mm frame a head band of 49–69% is 25–35 mm from the chin to the crown.
- Of the 51 mm of height that leaves 16–26 mm for the gap above the crown and the space below the chin together.
- At 300 dpi that is a head 295–413 pixels tall — below 295 px the file is too small to print, however good the crop is.

What cropping will not fix
- A wrong background — cropping does not repaint the wall behind you. This document needs: white or off-white
- A shadow on the face or on the wall. Step 1–2 m away from the wall and shoot facing a window.
- Glasses in the frame. This document does not accept them at all — take them off and shoot again.
- A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
- Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 602 × 602 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.

Where these numbers come from

- Indian Visa Online allows regular visa applicants to upload a digital photograph to complete the application.
- The regular (consular) visa portal requires JPEG format, 10-300 KB file size and equal photo height and width.
- The e-Visa portal publishes a different photo limit: JPEG, minimum 10 KB and maximum 1 MB. The 10-300 KB limit on that portal applies to the scanned passport bio-page, which is uploaded as a PDF, not to the photo.
- The uploaded photo must show full face, front view and open eyes, with the head centred from top of hair to bottom of chin.
- The official portal requires a plain light-coloured or white background, no shadows on the face or background, and no borders.
