Do not confuse it with another Japan document
Japan does not use one frame for everything. This page is about passport — 35 × 45 mm. The documents below are cut to a different size, so a file prepared here will not fit them.

Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one
Japan-specific things to know
- Japan states the head as 34 ± 2 mm from crown to jaw — a band of 32–36 mm — and calls the background «light colored… without anything in the back», not strictly white; the margins above and below the head are in a PDF drawing that scripts cannot download.
- The online upload rules depend on where you apply: a jpg up to 600 kB inside Japan, a jpg, jpeg, bmp or png of 20 kB to 2 MB abroad, and the abroad limit is checked after compression.
- You write your name on the back of the print, lightly — the notice warns about pen pressure that shows on the front — and «computer enhanced images are not accepted».

What the source confirms
- MOFA, passport photo standard (translated from the Japanese, updated 3 March 2025): the standard for passport photos is set on the recommendation of ICAO; the passport is the only proof of identity abroad and the photo is very important for identification; a traveller who uses an unsuitable photo may suffer disadvantage on leaving and entering; depending on the destination, face recognition technology may be used at entry; the photo must follow the standard, whose details are in the notice «旅券用提出写真についてのお知らせ» (PDF); a studio photo uploaded in an online application has file rules in addition.
- Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, passport photo requirements: 45 mm long × 35 mm wide; from the top of the head to the jaw 34 ± 2 mm; no frame; a light-coloured background without anything in the back; taken not more than six months before the application date; look squarely at the camera and not wear a hat; write your name on the back, mindful of the pen pressure so that nothing shows through or makes the surface uneven.
- Embassy of Japan in the Philippines: a passport-size photo (45 mm × 35 mm) taken within the last six months; computer-enhanced images are not accepted; the applicant's face must be properly photographed and centred. Consulate-General of Japan in Vancouver: one photo taken within six months, 35 mm × 45 mm, the size of the face from head to chin between 3.2 cm and 3.6 cm, facing forward with a plain background and no shadows, no hats, masks or sunglasses.
- MOFA, online applications (translated, 3 March 2025): a face photo can be taken with the application or uploaded from a studio. Applying in Japan: file format jpg, file size within 600 kilobytes. Applying abroad: file format jpg, jpeg, bmp or png, file size from 20 kilobytes to 2 megabytes; even if the size is within the range it is compressed on upload, and an error occurs if the compressed size exceeds the range.
