Argentina-specific things to know

  • Argentina asks for a uniform plain white background with a matte or semi-matte finish and a square 4 × 4 cm photograph, «half bust»; the first wording of 26 January 2011 said light blue (celeste) and was replaced by white from 1 March 2011.
  • The photograph is taken at the procedure, and religious or health coverings of the hair are accepted when the main features of the face are visible; religious face coverings have a reserved procedure.
  • The resolution protects the right of identity in its aspects of gender, culture and religion: the image must not alter or falsify the facial characteristics, and that right must not be affected.

How ID card photos are verified

The Argentine DNI photograph is fixed by RENAPER Resolution 169/2011: «current, taken from the front, half bust, with the head fully uncovered, in colour, with a uniform plain white background, matte or semi-matte, 4 cm by 4 cm», showing the facial features of the holder «faithfully and in full», and without alterations or falsifications of the facial characteristics — without affecting the right of identity in its aspects of gender, culture or religion. At the holder's request the official must accept the photograph with the hair covered for religious reasons or health treatments if the main features of the face are visible, and when a religious reason leads to covering the face partly or totally, the procedure and the photograph may be taken «in a reserved place and by officials of the same sex», with those images kept as reserved files.

The photograph is taken for the procedure — the biometric data (fingerprints, photo, signature) are captured when you apply; paper forms with a three-quarter right profile photo were accepted only for procedures begun until 30 June 2011.

How to take it

How to take your Argentina ID card photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain white

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 40 × 40 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.

What the source confirms
  • RENAPER Resolution 169/2011, article 1 in its current wording, as substituted by article 1 of Resolution 356/2011 (Boletín Oficial 22 February 2011; translated from the Spanish): the photographic image to be incorporated in the DNI and recorded in the files of the Registry must be current, taken from the front, half bust, with the head fully uncovered, in colour, with a uniform plain white background, matte or semi-matte, 4 cm by 4 cm, allowing the facial features of the holder to be appreciated faithfully and in full at the time of requesting the DNI; the image must lack alterations or falsifications of the facial characteristics, without violating or affecting the right of identity in its aspects of gender, culture or religion.
  • Same resolution, articles 2 to 4: at the request of the holder the official must accept the photograph when, for religious reasons or health treatments, a covering of the hair is required, provided the main features of the face are visible, and when for religious reasons the face is covered partly or totally, the procedure and the photograph may be obtained in a reserved place by officials of the same sex; the images of the second kind are kept as reserved in the files; paper applications with three-quarter right-profile photographs were admitted only for procedures begun until 30 June 2011.
  • The resolution states that the DNI is compulsory whenever identity must be proved and cannot be replaced by any other identity document (article 13 of Law 17.671), and that the photograph must reflect the person «in a unique way and as faithfully as possible», which is why it sets rules for the image rather than for a printed size alone.
