Belgium-specific things to know

  • Belgium asks for one photo at some missions (USA, Korea) and two at others (Jordan, Canada by post), and names a white background only in the USA list.
  • The USA list accepts «American or European passport-size» — the 2 × 2 inch print as well as the 35 × 45 mm one.
  • The photograph is taken or scanned again at every application, even when the fingerprints are not retaken within the 59 months.

How Schengen visa photos are verified

For a Belgian Schengen visa (visa C) the embassies' checklists ask for «one recent color photo: American or European passport-size, less than 6 months old with white background» (Belgium in the USA), «two recent photos (not older than 6 months)» (Jordan) and «a recent color photo» (Korea); for an application by post with a copy of the previous Schengen visa the Consulate General in Montreal asks for «two recent passport photos». At the appointment the photograph is also taken or scanned and registered together with the ten fingerprints in the Visa Information System, where it is stored for 59 months; a person who applies again within 59 months need not give the fingerprints again, but the photograph is integrated with every new application. The applicant appears in person with the printed, signed form, and the passport must be valid for the period of the trip plus three months with at least two blank pages. None of these pages gives a head size, expression or glasses rule.

How to take it

How to take your Belgium Schengen visa photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain white

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 35 × 45 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, teeth not visible

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.

What the source confirms
  • Belgium in the USA, «Checklist Schengen visa — tourism» (PDF, November 2023): the documents of the application include «5. One recent color photo: American or European passport-size, less than 6 months old with white background», the visa fee according to the consular fee schedule, proof of travel arrangements (a full itinerary with the reservations), proof of accommodation and, for a minor, the parents' authorisation with notarized signatures.
  • Belgium in Jordan, «Short stay visa — family or friends visit» (PDF): the list of the documents — the passport and all the used pages, a copy of the previously granted Schengen visas, the Schengen visa application form (fully completed, dated and signed), «5. Two recent photos (not older than 6 months)», a copy of the national identity card or residence card, the family booklet, the medical travel insurance, the invitation letter from a host in Belgium, a round-trip flight reservation and proof of sufficient financial means.
  • Belgium in Korea, «Visa C — short stays (90 days)»: all applicants come to the embassy in person with the documents in original; the general requirements — a passport at most 10 years old and valid for the period of the trip plus 3 months with at least 2 blank pages, a printed application form fully completed in French, Dutch or English and personally signed, «3. A recent color photo», and a copy of the alien registration card.
  • Belgium in Canada (Montreal), «Short stay visa (Schengen visa)»: an applicant who already holds a Schengen visa may send the file by post to the Consulate General, with a copy of the previous visa, «two recent passport photos» and the payment by certified cheque, bank draft or postal order; otherwise the whole file is brought to the appointment, where the fees are paid and the biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are provided.
  • Belgium in Jamaica, «Visa C application (short-stay visa)»: «All applicants for short-stay Schengen visa must appear in person to have their 10 fingerprints and their photograph registered. These data are stored for 59 months in the VIS»; the applicant is not obliged to appear again for the fingerprints if he or she applies for a new visa within these 59 months, in which case the application may be sent in by courier with a prepaid return, but the photograph has to be taken or scanned and integrated in the VIS with every new application.
