Chile-specific things to know

  • Chile asks for a square 5 × 5 cm photograph — not the 35 × 45 mm ICAO size — on a white background, full face, with no glasses, scarf or hat.
  • The photograph is uploaded to the consular services platform, so there is no print to hand in; the Chilean pages publish no file format or size.
  • The visa is required only of nationals of certain countries, for a stay of up to 90 days, and does not guarantee entry.

How visa photos are verified

For the Chilean prior authorisation or visa, requested online through the consular services platform of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the requirement is to «upload a colour photograph on a white background, passport size (5 × 5 cm), full face, without accessories such as glasses, scarf, hat, etc.» — the same wording on the consular site and on ChileAtiende («passport-type photograph: on a white background, size 5 × 5 cm and full face»), the latter updated on 21 September 2026. A copy of the data page of the valid passport goes with it. The authorisation is issued by Chilean consulates abroad to nationals of certain countries who enter Chile as holders of transitory stay; it can allow one or several entries and a stay of up to 90 days, and a request for multiple entries must be justified with the number of entries. It does not guarantee entry — the Chilean migration authority may refuse it. The pages publish no head size, file format or file size.

How to take it

How to take your Chile visa photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain white

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 50 × 50 mm.

Glasses

Glasses prohibited

Take them off before the shot.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.

  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile (consular site), «Autorización previa o visa», requirements: complete the form on the consular services platform explaining the reason for the trip and the length of stay; a request for multiple entries must be justified, specifying the number of entries; upload a colour photograph on a white background, passport size (5 × 5 cm), full face, without accessories such as glasses, scarf or hat; a copy of the personalisation sheet of the valid passport.
  • Same page, the authorisation: it may authorise one or multiple entries and allows a stay of up to 90 days; once in Chile the permit can be extended for 90 days through the National Migration Service; holders of transitory stay may not carry out paid activities except in the cases of article 50 of law 21.325 and may not apply for a residence permit within Chile unless they meet the requirements of the regulation; it is requested on the consular services platform online.
  • ChileAtiende, «Autorización previa o visa» (last update 21 September 2026): the visa is granted by Chilean consulates abroad and required, for reasons of national interest or international reciprocity, of nationals of certain countries entering Chile as holders of transitory stay; the application is entered all year on the Ministry's consular services platform; documents: the application form, a passport-type photograph with a white background, size 5 × 5 cm and full face, a copy of the personalisation sheet of the valid passport, proof of residence if living in a country other than that of the nationality, proof of own economic means (the last three payslips or bank statements), and no entry ban.
  • ChileAtiende, notes: the prior authorisation or visa does not guarantee entry to Chile — the Chilean migration authority may prevent it if the conditions of the legislation in force are not met.
