Croatia-specific things to know

  • Croatia needs no photograph at all if a suitable one — used for an earlier card or passport within five years, with the appearance unchanged — is on record.
  • The Ministry gives the head size as «about 2/3 of the picture, but not higher than 36 mm» and checks it with a template of a red and a yellow oval; the background is «ideally light grey».
  • Blind applicants may wear dark sunglasses in the photograph, and a head covering is accepted for religious or medical reasons with the cheeks, chin and forehead visible.

How ID card photos are verified

For a Croatian ID card (eOI) the Ministry of the Interior's page asks the applicant to «attach 1 colour photograph of 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm», and «an accurate representation of the person … without any head covering» — exceptionally a head covering worn for medical or religious reasons, with the cheeks, chin and forehead not covered, and, for a blind person, dark sunglasses. No photo has to be attached if a photograph used for an earlier ID card or passport is stored in the records, not more than five years have passed since it was first used and the person's appearance has not changed significantly. The Ministry's instructions for the e-document photographs give the 35 × 45 mm template: the head «from the chin to the crown … about 2/3 of the picture, but not higher than 36 mm», centred, the eyes at least 8 mm apart (10 mm is optimal), a photograph of six months at most, not stretched or mirrored; sharp and evenly lit, without shadows, damage or dirt; the background «single-coloured light (ideally light grey)» without patterns or shadows; a neutral expression with the eyes open and the mouth closed, looking straight into the camera, with no hair over the eyes; spectacles without reflections, tint or frames over the eyes; a head covering only for religious reasons with the face clear from the chin to the forehead; the photograph is printed «on high-quality, glossy and smooth paper without surface structure»; a child is alone in the picture.

How to take it

How to take your Croatia ID card photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain light

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 35 × 45 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.

What the source confirms
  • Ministry of the Interior of Croatia, «Osobna iskaznica (eOI)» (Croatian, translated), the application: the applicant shows a previously issued identity card or another public document with a photograph (the identity of children without documents is confirmed by their parents' statement), attaches 1 colour photograph of 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm and signs the agreement on certification services; when a card is replaced the old card is handed in.
  • Same page, the exception: a photograph does not have to be attached if a photograph that was used earlier for an identity card or a passport is stored in the records of identity cards or travel documents, provided that not more than five years have passed since the photograph was first used and the person's appearance has not changed significantly; a new card has to be requested if, among other reasons, the photograph on the card no longer corresponds to the person's appearance.
  • e-Građani (gov.hr), «Identity card issuance»: the photo provided with the application has to be an accurate representation of the person submitting it, without any head covering; exceptionally, a photograph may be taken where a person wears a head covering for medical or religious reasons, under the condition that the cheeks, chin and forehead are not covered; blind people who wear dark sunglasses can provide photos in which they are wearing them.
  • Ministry of the Interior, «Upute za pripremu fotografija za e-dokumente» (Croatian, translated), the method and the format: the photograph is placed under a template so that the lower edge of the chin touches the chin line, and the head size is acceptable if its edges lie in the green zone between the red oval (the largest) and the yellow oval (the smallest); the head width is the distance between the bases of the left and right ear; templates are given for 30 × 35 mm and 35 × 45 mm; for 35 × 45 mm the photograph is 35 mm wide and 45 mm high, the head (from the chin to the crown or parting) takes about 2/3 of the picture and is not higher than 36 mm, hair may stick out of the picture, the distance of the eyes (from the middle of the left to the middle of the right eye) is at least 8 mm (optimal 10 mm), the head is centred, and the photograph is not older than six months and must not show the head stretched or changed in any way (no mirror-reversed pictures, no changes of proportions).
  • Same instructions, sharpness, paper, background and pose: the face sharp, full of contrast and clear in all areas; the photograph made on high-quality, glossy and smooth paper without surface structure (for example a pattern of the paper) with high print quality, with no scratches, stains, fingerprints or fold marks, natural colours and no red eyes; the background uniformly light (ideally light grey) with sufficient contrast to the face and hair, with no patterns or shadows, and only the photographed person in the picture; even lighting, with no reflection or shadows on the face; a neutral expression with the mouth closed on a frontal shot — no profile pose, half-profile or smile; the person looks directly into the camera, the eyes open and clearly visible and level with the x axis, and the eyes, nose and mouth are not covered by hair; glasses with clear and exact recognisability of the eyes, no reflections, tinted lenses or sunglasses, and no frame or glass edge covering the eyes; head coverings are not allowed except for religious reasons, with the face recognisable from the lower edge of the chin to the forehead and no shadows on it; children are alone in the picture, the face fully visible and the eyes open.
