Do not confuse it with another Canada document
Canada does not use one frame for everything. This page is about citizenship certificate — 50 × 70 mm. The documents below are cut to a different size, so a file prepared here will not fit them.

What we fix for free, and what AI fixes
Fixed for free
- Background. Replaced with the one this document asks for: even plain background without shadows.
- Head tilt. Straightened if the head leans slightly to one side.
- Frame. Exactly 50 × 70 mm, by the document’s rules.
- A light shadow on one side of the face. Gently brightened.
- File and print sheet. A file to the document’s rules and a 10 × 15 or A4 sheet to print.
What can't be fixed for free, AI correction fixes
- Hard shadows and uneven light on the face.
- A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
- Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 591 × 827 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.
- Clothing and pose. Shoulders out of frame, body turned away from the camera.
Glare on the lenses. Take the glasses off or turn away from the light source and shoot again.
Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one
Canada-specific things to know
- The citizenship photo is 50 × 70 mm, not the passport size, and the background may be white or light-coloured, unlike the strictly white one of the permanent resident card.
- The file must be saved directly from the camera: no cropping, editing or filters — even removing shadows or glare counts as altering — and it carries studio information in a receipt or text file.
- Glasses are accepted when the eyes are clearly visible, but sunglasses and tinted lenses are refused even with a prescription.
Printing on a single sheet

Print at 100% scale, borderless, and turn off fit-to-page so each photo keeps its exact size.

Where these numbers come from
Source: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Last checked against the official page on 1 Oct 2026.
What the source confirms
- IRCC, proof of citizenship online — number, source and size: «You must provide 1 colour digital photo»; go to a commercial photographer or studio; size 50 mm wide × 70 mm high (2 inches wide × 2-3/4 inches long); the height of the face between 31 mm (1-1/4 inches) and 36 mm (1-7/16 inches) from chin to crown of head (natural top of head).
- Same page, image quality: clear, sharp and in focus; uniform lighting and no shadows, glare or flash reflections; a clear difference between the face and the background; natural skin tones; an original photo not altered in any way — adjusting colour, brightness, contrast or sharpness, cropping around the head and shoulders and pasting them on a white background, editing facial features, removing glare, red eye, wrinkles or blemishes, changing hair colour, clothing or background, even eliminating shadows, are alterations.
- Same page, digital photos: JPG or JPEG format with minimal compression; saved directly from the camera without any changes to the original file; at least 420 by 540 pixels; approximately 240 kB in file size but no more than 4 MB; the receipt or a separate text file with the first and last name of the person in the photo, the name and complete address of the photographer or studio, and the date the photo was taken.
- Same page, expression, posture and appearance: a neutral facial expression (eyes open and clearly visible, mouth closed, no smiling or frowning); taken no more than 6 months before you submit your application; face and shoulders straight-on to the camera, centred and squared; a plain white or light-coloured background; glasses accepted if the eyes are clearly visible, the frames do not cover them and there is no glare; hair down or up; hats and head coverings worn daily for religious beliefs or medical reasons if the full face is clearly visible and no shadows; a wheelchair user places a white blanket behind the head. Not accepted: sunglasses or tinted glasses even if prescription, red-eye effect, hats and head coverings not worn daily for those reasons, shadows around the ears, in the background or across the face or shoulders.
- Same page, headwear, nasal cannula and children: for medical headwear or a nasal cannula the eyes must be clearly visible and a signed letter of explanation is added, and a letter from the doctor may be asked; child photos show the head and shoulders only, no hands of the parent or child; a newborn may be photographed in a car seat with a white blanket over the seat behind the head and no shadows; some range of expression is allowed for infants.
