What these millimetres work out to
- In a 35 × 45 mm frame a head band of 69–80% is 31.1–36 mm from the chin to the crown.
- Of the 45 mm of height that leaves 9–14 mm for the gap above the crown and the space below the chin together.

Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one
Canada-specific things to know
- The IRCC photo is not a tight passport crop: the head is 31–36 mm in a frame of at least 35 × 45 mm, and the tops of the shoulders are included.
- The digital file has a floor and a target: not less than 60 kB, ideally 240 kB, at least 420 × 540 pixels, in 24-bit colour; a scan needs 600 pixels per inch.
- Black-and-white is accepted on the paper sheet, but the digital photo must be in colour; non-tinted prescription glasses are permitted if the eyes are clearly visible.

What the source confirms
- IRCC, International Experience Canada work permit, digital photo: «The final frame size of the photo must be at least 35 mm x 45 mm. The photographs must show a full front view of the head and tops of shoulders, with the face in the middle of the photograph. The size of the head, from chin to crown, must be between 31 mm and 36 mm.» The physical dimensions in pixels must be at least 420 × 540.
- Same page, quality and format: if you scan a photo you already have, the minimum resolution must be 600 pixels per inch; the file may be submitted in JPEG or JPEG2000 format; «The final size of the image should ideally be 240 kB (kilobytes), but not less than 60 kB»; the image must be in colour (24 bits per pixel) in RGB colour space, the common output of most digital cameras.
- IRCC, temporary resident photograph specifications (paper): two photographs «identical and taken within the last six months», either black and white or colour, printed on quality photographic paper, «clear, well defined and taken against a plain white or light-coloured background»; if digital, not altered in any way; the frame at least 35 mm × 45 mm (1 3/8″ × 1 3/4″) showing the full front view of the head with the face in the middle and the top of the shoulders; the head, from chin to crown, between 31 mm (1 1/4″) and 36 mm (1 7/16″).
- Same specification, expression and accessories: the face square to the camera with a neutral expression, neither frowning nor smiling, and the mouth closed; non-tinted prescription glasses may be worn as long as the eyes are clearly visible and the frame does not cover any part of them; sunglasses are not acceptable; a hairpiece or other cosmetic accessory is acceptable if it does not disguise your normal appearance; a head covering for religious reasons must not obscure the full facial features. «If the photographs do not meet the specifications, you will have to provide new photographs before your application can be processed.»
