Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one
Canada-specific things to know
- The permanent resident photo is 50 × 70 mm — larger than the 35 × 45 mm of the Canadian visa — and must come from a commercial photographer; it is valid for 12 months, not 6.
- The background is white and the page warns against white clothing and white religious head coverings, which blend into it and cast shadows.
- Cutting your head and shoulders out and pasting them on a white background counts as an alteration; so does removing glare, red eye or shadows.

What the source confirms
- IRCC, permanent resident photos, number and source: for an online application you submit 1 digital photo in the Permanent Residence Portal; go to a commercial photographer or studio; you can submit a professional digital photo or a scanned copy of a printed professional photo; a photo of a paper photo taken with a digital camera or phone is not accepted; the photo must reflect how you look now, taken no more than 12 months before you apply.
- IRCC specification sheet: the photographs must be taken by a commercial photographer; 50 mm × 70 mm (2 inches wide × 2 3/4 inches long) and sized so that the height of the face measures between 31 mm and 36 mm from chin to crown of head (natural top of the head); clear, sharp and in focus; a neutral facial expression (eyes open and clearly visible, mouth closed, no smiling); uniform lighting without shadows, glare or flash reflections; taken straight on with face and shoulders centred and squared to the camera; a plain, untextured and white background with a clear difference between the face and the background; natural skin tones; in colour or in black and white; identical and unaltered; original, not taken from an existing photograph.
- IRCC, digital photo specifications: JPEG or PNG format (the page: .jpeg or .jpg; the sheet: JPEG or PNG); dimensions between 715 × 1000 and 2000 × 2800 pixels; a file of 4 MB or less; colour or black and white; sharp, with uniform lighting and a clear difference between the face and the white background; avoid white clothing or white religious head coverings; the photo must not be altered — corrections of brightness, contrast, sharpness, cropping around the head and shoulders, cutting and pasting the image on a white background, editing facial features, removing glare, red eye, wrinkles or birthmarks, changing hair colour, clothing or background are all alterations.
- IRCC, appearance and the back of the photo: neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open, looking directly at the camera; face and shoulders centred and squared to the camera; hair off the face so that the edges of the face are visible; glasses with the eyes clearly visible and no glare; a head covering allowed if worn daily for religious or medical reasons with the face, including around the ears, background and shoulders clearly visible and casting no shadows; remove facial jewellery and avoid turtlenecks and bulky jackets. The back of one photograph must show the name and date of birth, the date the photo was taken, and the name and complete address of the studio — by stamp or handwriting; stick-on labels are unacceptable; for a digital photo this information is one separate document with a confirmation from the studio such as a receipt.
