Canada does not use one frame for everything. This page is about passport — 50 × 70 mm. The documents below are cut to a different size, so a file prepared here will not fit them.

What cropping will not fix
- A wrong background — cropping does not repaint the wall behind you. This document needs: white
- A shadow on the face or on the wall. Step 1–2 m away from the wall and shoot facing a window.
- Glare on the lenses. Take the glasses off or turn away from the light source and shoot again.
- A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
- Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 591 × 827 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.

Canada-specific things to know
- Unique to Canada: photo must be taken by a commercial photographer who endorses (signs + dates + prints address) the back of one of the two required prints — self-taken photos rejected
- February 2026 unified standard: passport and PR card photos now use the same 50×70mm format (previously PR card was 35×45mm)
- Service Canada offices charge CAD 16 to take a compliant photo on-site if applicants arrive without one — useful fallback
- Express Entry / PR applications submitted online still require photographer-endorsed prints mailed to IRCC separately — digital-only is not yet accepted for PR routes
