What we fix for free, and what AI fixes
Fixed for free
- Background. Replaced with the one this document asks for: plain background without shadows per official Austrian Passbildkriterien.
- Head tilt. Straightened if the head leans slightly to one side.
- Frame. Exactly 35 × 45 mm, by the document’s rules.
- A light shadow on one side of the face. Gently brightened.
- File and print sheet. A file to the document’s rules and a 10 × 15 or A4 sheet to print.
What can't be fixed for free, AI correction fixes
- Hard shadows and uneven light on the face.
- A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
- Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 413 × 531 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.
- Clothing and pose. Shoulders out of frame, body turned away from the camera.
Glare on the lenses. Take the glasses off or turn away from the light source and shoot again.
Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one
Austria-specific things to know
- Only a maximum head height is official: the head must not be taller than 36 mm and should take about two thirds of the 45 mm height. There is no published minimum in millimetres.
- The background is not white by default: the BMI says plain light, ideally grey, matched to the hair — medium grey for light hair, light grey for dark hair.
- The eye distance (centre of one eye to centre of the other) must be at least 8 mm, optimally 10 mm — a measurable check on the 35 mm width.
- Not only the picture but the print is regulated: glossy smooth paper without surface texture, no creases, stains or stamp marks, and no mirrored or reshaped face.
Printing on a single sheet

Where these numbers come from
Source: oesterreich.gv.at / BMI. Last checked against the official page on 1 Oct 2026.
What the source confirms
- BMI Passbild-Kriterien: the photo must be 35 mm wide and 45 mm high; the head (chin tip to crown) about 2/3 of the image but not higher than 36 mm; high hairstyles may extend beyond the picture; eye distance at least 8 mm (10 mm optimal); head centred; not older than 6 months.
- Same page, background: plain light (ideally grey), with enough contrast to the face and hair — medium grey suits light hair, light grey suits dark hair; no pattern; no shadows on the background; only the person photographed, no other persons or objects.
- Pose and expression (oesterreich.gv.at): frontal picture, neutral expression, eyes unobstructed, mouth closed, natural skin tones; a tilted or turned head is not allowed; glasses must not impair the clear view of the eyes; head coverings worn for religious reasons are allowed; deviations only where a person's stage of development or physical conditions make anything else impossible.
- Print quality: high-quality, glossy, smooth paper without surface structure (for example a honeycomb pattern) at high print resolution; no scratches, stains, stamp impressions or creases; natural colours (no red eyes); the face sharp, high in contrast, evenly lit, without distortion, mirroring or changed proportions.
- Application: the passport application needs one colour portrait photo of 35 × 45 mm not older than six months, handed in at a passport authority in Austria (Bezirkshauptmannschaft, Magistrat, or the Magistratische Bezirksämter in Vienna); the passport is normally valid for ten years.
