UAE-specific things to know
- A renewal needs a new photo: ICP says the picture must not be identical to the one printed on the current ID card.
- The size is written 4.5×3.5 cm for the ID card, and the same guide writes the passport photo both as 4.5*3.5 and as 3.5 × 4.5 cm; the white background is required, not just a light one.
- For residents the ID card follows the residence permit on one unified form, and anyone aged 15 and over goes to an ICP centre for fingerprints and a signature.

What the source confirms
- ICP Services Guide 2024, «Issuance of a new ID», «Renewal of the ID card» and «Issuance of a lost / damaged ID card»: documents required for all categories — a personal photo (4.5x3.5 cm) with a white background; the original of the agency certificate for a person acting on behalf of the customer; a copy of the passport for the category of residents and GCC nationals; for residents under 15 the original birth certificate and the passport of one of the parents; an original residence permit under process or a valid residence permit for those who did not issue an ID card when issuing the residence permit.
- Same guide, conditions: a valid residence permit is required to be linked to the application for the ID card for the resident category; the passport of the resident and GCC categories must be valid for more than 6 months; the resident category's ID service is linked to the issuance of a residence permit through the unified form for identity and residence applied for through the personal account or companies; the customer must complete the requirements (fingerprint, signature) within the specified period to avoid deactivating the application.

An appointment is required for the cases where the customer needs to visit the centre for biometric (fingerprint) procedures.
- ICP Personal Photo Specifications (leaflet) and news of 16 December 2021: the leaflet asks for a photo of no more than 6 months, 35–40 mm in width, with the face taking up 70–80 % of the photograph, sharp, with natural skin tones, a plain light-coloured background, uniform lighting without shadows, flash reflections or red eye, glasses without reflections or tinted lenses, and head coverings only for religious reasons with the face from chin to forehead visible; the news item says ICP held a workshop for photography service providers on the standards for accepting personal photos on its smart systems, following the updated standards for the electronic submission of residence permit and ID card applications.
