What we fix for free, and what AI fixes
Fixed for free
- Background. Replaced with the one this document asks for: strictly white, high-quality background.
- Head tilt. Straightened if the head leans slightly to one side.
- Frame. Exactly 35 × 45 mm, by the document’s rules.
- A light shadow on one side of the face. Gently brightened.
- File and print sheet. A file to the document’s rules and a 10 × 15 or A4 sheet to print.
What can't be fixed for free, AI correction fixes
- Hard shadows and uneven light on the face.
- A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
- Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 413 × 531 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.
- Clothing and pose. Shoulders out of frame, body turned away from the camera.
Glare on the lenses. Take the glasses off or turn away from the light source and shoot again.
Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one
UAE-specific things to know
- The Golden Residence service pages list a «Personal Photo» without a size, so the standard is ICP's general photo specification: a width of 35–40 mm, the face at 70–80 %, recent, within six months.
- ICP's PDF says «plain light-coloured background» while its FAQ says «white background» — white satisfies both.
- Only medical glasses are permitted, without tint, reflections or frames over the eyes, and hats and sunglasses are not allowed; a religious head covering must leave the face from the chin to the forehead and both edges visible.

Where these numbers come from
Source: Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), UAE. Last checked against the official page on 1 Oct 2026.
What the source confirms
- ICP service pages, Golden Residence (individuals with specialized talents; real estate investor): the terms are valid health insurance in the UAE and a passport valid for no less than 6 months, and for the investor a property fully owned by the applicant; the required documents are the passport and a personal photo, with a recommendation or approval of the competent authority for the talent category, or a letter from the Real Estate Registration Department confirming ownership of property worth at least AED 2,000,000. The photo has no size on the pages.
- ICP, Personal Photo Specifications: no more than 6 months old; 35–40 mm in width; a close-up of the head and the top of the shoulders so that the face takes up 70–80 % of the photograph; sharp focus and high quality, with no ink marks or creases; looking directly at the camera; natural skin tones; appropriate brightness and contrast; printed on high-quality paper at high resolution; colour neutral; eyes open and clearly visible with no hair across them; facing square on to the camera, both edges of the face clearly shown; a plain light-coloured background; uniform lighting without shadows or flash reflections on the face and no red eye.
- ICP, Personal Photo Specifications and FAQ — glasses, head coverings, frame: no flash reflection off the glasses and no tinted lenses, the frames not covering any part of the eyes; head coverings not permitted except for religious reasons, with the facial features from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead and both edges of the face clearly shown; the photograph shows you alone, looking at the camera with a neutral expression and the mouth closed; the FAQ states the same ICAO standards with a white background — wearing hats or sunglasses is not allowed and only medical glasses are permitted, provided they do not cover the eyes.
