Rejection guide

Australia visa photo rejected — Home Affairs reasons and how to fix each

Australian visa applications use the standard 35 × 45 mm biometric format — the same as Schengen, UK and most Commonwealth countries. The most common rejection cause is not size but image quality: Home Affairs requires a minimum 900 × 1200 pixel digital file, which is higher than most national portals.

Fast diagnosis

Top 3: low resolution, head not centred, background shadow

The three highest-frequency Home Affairs rejection causes are: photo below the 900 × 1200 pixel minimum, head not centred horizontally in the 35 × 45 mm frame, and shadow on the background from indoor lighting. All three are fixed by retaking with the rear camera at full resolution against a plain wall under window daylight.

Top 7 rejection reasons

1

Low digital resolution

Home Affairs requires minimum 900 × 1200 pixels. Phone photos sent via WhatsApp or Messenger drop below this — they are compressed during transfer.

2

Head not centred in frame

ImmiAccount automated check requires the head centred within tight tolerances. A head shifted left or right by even a few mm fails.

3

Background shadow

Shadow on the wall behind the head is the top desk-rejection cause. Stand at least 1 metre from the wall and face a window.

4

Glasses visible

Discouraged at most VACs because of glare risk. Remove for the shot.

5

Smile detected

Home Affairs prefers fully neutral. A closed-lip smile sometimes passes; safer to keep mouth closed.

6

Wrong head ratio

Chin-to-crown must be 32-36 mm in the 35 × 45 mm frame. Too small fails; too large crops the crown.

7

Photo from screen capture

A screenshot of a photo on a phone screen produces moiré patterns that automated checks detect.

5-step recovery checklist

  1. 1Use the rear camera at maximum resolution (12 MP or higher).
  2. 2Send the file via AirDrop / direct USB / Google Drive — not WhatsApp or messaging apps.
  3. 3Stand 1-2 metres from a plain wall under window daylight.
  4. 4Take 5-10 frames, pick the most centred.
  5. 5Use a tool that crops to 35 × 45 mm with the head ratio fitted automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Home Affairs need such a high resolution?

The 900 × 1200 pixel minimum allows the photo to be printed at the full 35 × 45 mm size at 600+ DPI for the visa sticker. Lower-resolution photos print softer and may fail facial-recognition checks at the border.

Can I use a photo taken with the front camera?

No. The front (selfie) camera uses a wide-angle lens that distorts head proportions. The Home Affairs biometric check rejects photos with selfie-camera distortion.

My photo passed ImmiAccount but the VAC rejected it — why?

The VAC takes a fresh biometric photo at the appointment. If your uploaded photo passes the ImmiAccount check but the VAC officer is concerned about quality, they may re-capture in person. The fresh capture is binding; the uploaded version is supplementary.
