What cropping will not fix
- A wrong background — cropping does not repaint the wall behind you. This document needs: plain light
- A shadow on the face or on the wall. Step 1–2 m away from the wall and shoot facing a window.
- Glare on the lenses. Take the glasses off or turn away from the light source and shoot again.
- A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
- Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 413 × 531 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.

Russia-specific things to know
- Matte paper is REJECTED — must be glossy or opaque (unusual rule)
- Background WHITE for passport, but LIGHT GREY for visas (same authority, different docs)
- Same 35×45mm spec applies to both internal RF passport and zagranpassport

Where these numbers come from

- The official photo-requirements sheet confirms 35 × 45 mm photos for Russian internal passport applications.
- The photo may be black-and-white or colour and must match the applicant's age on the application date.
- The head and upper shoulders must fit in the frame, and the chin-to-crown distance must not exceed 80% of the image height.
- The background must be white and plain, without stripes, stains, objects or shadows.
- Uniforms, outerwear and scarves covering part of the chin are not allowed; applicants who permanently wear glasses must be photographed in untinted glasses that do not cover the eyes.
