What cropping will not fix
- A wrong background — cropping does not repaint the wall behind you. This document needs: plain light
- A shadow on the face or on the wall. Step 1–2 m away from the wall and shoot facing a window.
- Glare on the lenses. Take the glasses off or turn away from the light source and shoot again.
- A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
- Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 413 × 531 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.

Where these numbers come from

- The Russian visa photo specification requires a 3.5 × 4.5 cm photo.
- The photo may be colour or black-and-white, with a clear full-face image and no head covering.
- The photo must be taken no earlier than 6 months before the visa application date.
- The English consular photo guidance also requires a light white or off-white background and the face in focus.
- Sunglasses, hats and caps are not allowed unless the item is worn for religious or ethnic reasons.
